10 TV Douche-Bags Who Get Away With Everything
6. Nathan Young- Misfits
'Misfits' lovers will have fond memories of Nathan. Unlike most of the entrants on this list, he would probably be the first to admit his douche-bag sensibilities and even wear it as a twisted badge of honour. His crass sense of humour regularly put him at odds with other members of the 'ASBO Five' and his persistent harassment of the crippling shy Simon (pictured left) merely confirmed his douche-bag status- and everybody loved him for it.
I can't quite put my finger on the things that made Nathan such a breakout character. Maybe it had something to do with his charming Irish accent or his innate ability to make the most tense scenes absolutely hilarious. Whatever it was he drew us all to our TVs in droves, which subsequently gave him a blank cheque to act as much of a buffoon as he desired whilst leaving us wanting more every week.
His powers of immortality suited him down to a T. Just when we thought his flippant attitude took him a step too far at the end of season one, the once powerless, foul-mouthed smart alec returned back from the dead, impervious to insult or injury, more powerful than the rest of the gang put together. For the next season, Nathan was free to defecate on people's beds, shoot himself in the head and not give a moment's thought about the consequences.
Personally, I was never a big fan of Nathan's but I have to admit that 'Misfits' declined sharply once Robert Sheehan called time on his role as a superhero community service worker extraordinaire. His decision to cash in on his new found stardom left the writers in the lurch without their prized asset to deliver all the witty lines. Nathan's departure did give Simon his chance to come out of his Clark Kent shell and realise his Superman potential to mixed success, but Misfits is still missing a spark that none of the replacement characters have really been able to re-ignite- and the show has suffered for it.
