10 TV Shows From The '90s That Totally Overused The Word "Totally"
4. Sweet Valley High
Original Run: 1994 - 1997 Loosely based on Francine Pascal's book series of the same name, Sweet Valley High focused on the lives of twin sisters Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield - two beautiful blondes who lived in the fictitious town of Sweet Valley, California - and their group of friends. Elizabeth was really nice and Jessica was a complete tool, but both of them (and their friends) let the side down with their overuse of the word "totally". It was one of those series in which the word was only really used in fairly normal sentences and phrases - the kind in which you'd expect it to be used ("I totally forgot", "this is totally cool" etc) - but the overemphasis on the word made each and every individual who uttered it the target of everyone's hatred. Like, Totally Examples: *Elizabeth arrives at her locker to see a ribbon and "happy anniversary" poster on it* Elizabeth: What's this? Oh no! Enid: That's so romantic! Elizabeth: I can't believe it! I totally forgot! *Elizabeth's boyfriend Todd appears* Todd: Happy anniversary, Liz! Elizabeth: Liz, don't you think you're taking this competition a little too seriously? It's supposed to be fun, remember? Jessica: I am having fun! And I'll have even more fun when we beat that pompous nimrod Bruce. Lila: Aren't we fired up! Could there be a little summer loving going on between you and Bruce? Jessica: That is totally ridiculous. Incidentally, this show even had an episode called "Totally Cueless" (not "clueless", "cueless").
