10 TV Shows Literally One Step From Perfection
5. Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp — Drop The Kid's Plot
We’re not really into using the individual “I” here at WhatCulture, but sometimes rules are made to be broken, so let me open by saying I’m sorry, David Bloom and Thomas Barbusca.
The pair of adorable kids are talented thespians and have gone on to do funny work in everything from Arrested Development to The Goldbergs to The Mick.
That said, there is absolutely no reason for the interminable “kid vs bully” plot to exist in David Wain and Michael Showalter’s long-awaited follow-up to their 2001 cult comedy hit.
The original film benefited from its shaggy and shapeless throw-it-in structure, and the show does have many moments of genuine hilarity among the reunited cast. Hell, it’s impressive they got the cast back together at all!
That said, it’s hard to watch the show without wishing the creators had jettisoned the painfully slow and unfunny central plot, which follows a bullied kid through summer camp, and just cut together a funny hundred-minute follow-up to the classic flick.
I mean, the best moments in the new show are between Elizabeth Banks, Chris Pine, Jon Hamm, and Michael Cera—feel free to give them the newly available screen time!
