10 TV Shows That Failed Spectacularly In Their Final Season

4. Weeds

Ted Lasso Season 3
Showtime

It's a common opinion among fans of Showtime's dark comedy series Weeds that it probably should've ended at season three, when widow-turned-weed-dealer Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) burned down her neighbourhood in order to cover up her criminal activities.

But Weeds limped on for five more seasons, with the law of diminishing returns kicking in harder with each passing year, culminating in the shambles that was season eight.

By this point the show's central characters had become firmly Flanderized parodies of their former selves, and Nancy most of all was an almost irredeemably unlikeable presence.

The storytelling was a pure slog, simply hovering in place until the series finale, when it delivered a saccharine "happy" ending for the Botwins and company that felt wholly unearned.

By the time Weeds finally wrapped up, all but the most die-hard fans had been checked out for at least a few years.
