4. It’s All About The Game - Lost

Lost John Locke Othello
ABC

Lost infamously baffled viewers across its near six-year run, leaving audiences amazed and appalled in equal measure. Haunted islands, smoke monsters, screaming birds, Lost was properly bonkers and, to some people, that was brilliant.

In its most distilled form, Lost was about the struggle between two mythological brothers: Jacob and the Man in Black.

One was good, one was evil. One was represented by light, the other by darkness. At its core, this is fundamental storytelling, and also the format for a very popular board game.

The show's pilot episode features a conversation between characters John Locke and Walt Lloyd. Their chat is about backgammon, which is that complicated game with the counters that your Nan likes.

Locke explains that backgammon is old, that sets were found in the ruins of ancient Mesopotamia. He attempts to teach young Walt the game, explaining that there are "Two players. Two sides. One is light one is dark."

A complex and ancient struggle boiled down to a one-on-one battle between light and dark - Lost and backgammon have a lot more in common than you'd think.
