10 TV Shows To Fill That Doctor Who Shaped Void

4. Elementary

This is a good illustration that you can take the exact same idea and come up with two very different interpretations. Elementary is another series following the adventures of a contemporary Holmes and Watson. The key differences are that it is US set and made, Watson is a woman, and each series has 8 times as many episodes as the UK version. Elementary is a more traditional police procedural and will appeal to those who have an aversion to Moffat and Gatiss. Some of the plots need to be taken with a pinch of credibility salt but they are clever, and true to the Conan Doyle foundations. In Elementary, Holmes is a drug addict and his recovery is a major theme throughout the series. How Who is Elementary, then? Well, the influence of the literary Holmes on the character of the Doctor has been often commented upon. Sherlock is a man so brilliant that he struggles to build healthy relationships with normal people, and battles with boredom between cases. Again, he has a passion for justice and a select group of disciples. Jonny Lee Miller's Holmes is like a younger, sexier Twelfth Doctor. There is one more think link to the Whoniverse. Inspector Lestrade makes occasional appearances and is played by Sean Pertwee, the son of Jon Pertwee. That€™s a royal stamp of approval if ever there was one.
