10 Underrated Horror TV Shows From The '90s You Totally Forgot About
3. American Gothic
If you're looking for a more obscure '90s horror show, American Gothic is sure to delight.
The show focused on Sheriff Lucas Buck, a man who used his supernatural gifts to both manipulate and murder en route to power. Opposite of him was Caleb Temple, who had to resist the sheriff's sinister temptations.
The pilot episode alone should have been enough to warrant a second season of American Gothic, as it held no punches and immediately brought viewers into the darkest corners of Trinity, South Carolina. Here, Buck murdered Caleb's sister Merlyn and convinced his father to end his life soon after. As for his mother, it turned out she shared a child with Buck, and that child was Caleb.
The series consisted of an unraveling mystery with plenty of drama, as Buck tried to con Caleb into becoming his corrupt protege. To help steer him toward the light was the returning ghost of Merlyn.
Unfortunately, viewers never found out if Buck got his comeuppance once and for all, as the show was canceled after just one season. The show was a bit twisted for being on the same channel as Murder She Wrote, and the way the show was aired made it far more confusing than it needed to be. Luckily, you can now stream the series or pick up a copy of the DVD and watch the episodes by number instead of airdate to get the most out of American Gothic.
