10 Villains We Hope To See In Daredevil: Born Again
5. The Gladiator
In the first season of Daredevil, our titular hero encountered an inventor called Melvin Potter, who constructed armour for Kingpin. Although Matt Murdock was at odds with him at first, he encouraged Potter to help him craft his own armoured outfit, which became the classic Daredevil costume.
Potter may seem like a minor character, but comic fans instantly recognised him as the supervillain, the Gladiator. (The gladiatorial posters in his workshop were a little on the nose.)
His cameo was a nice touch, but it was a shame Potter didn't get the chance to embrace his villainous persona, since he's an underrated and deeply tragic character. Unlike other costumed criminals, Potter is not monstrous, but troubled. Even though he wishes to live in peace, Potter's mental illness causes him to suffer delusions and violent tendencies. Despite viewing Daredevil as a friend, he will try to kill him if he succumbs to his dark thoughts.
We all love seeing DD pummel scumbags and gangsters into the ground, but it would be a lot more impactful to watch him fight someone called the Gladiator, knowing he's a victim.
