10 Weirdest Buffy The Vampire Slayer Episodes

7. Hush (Season 4, Episode 10)

Buffy the vampire slayer
Mutant Enemy

‘Hush’, on the other hand, is one of the greatest episodes in the show’s history.

It features the terrifying Gentlemen who enter Sunnydale and steal the hearts of their victims. Their only weakness is a human scream, but in order to prevent anyone exploiting this weakness, they use magic to silence the citizens of Sunnydale. Buffy and the gang then have to communicate without words and find a way to take down these terrifying villains.

The odd thing about ‘Hush’ is that it’s one of the funniest and one of the scariest episodes of the show. The scene in the lecture theatre is laugh-out-loud funny whilst the scenes with the Gentlemen will give you nightmares. Thankfully, the absence of dialogue gives these tonal shifts a degree of cohesion so they don’t grind against one another.

‘Hush’ is also one of the cleverest Buffy episodes. It’s essentially a forty-five-minute look at communication and all the difficulties that come with it. The opening lecture from Professor Walsh establishes this theme and it’s explored throughout the story.

Writing an episode with hardly any dialogue is risky, but the execution is flawless here. ‘Hush’ is an extraordinary piece of television and the best episode of Season 4.
