10 Weirdest Buffy The Vampire Slayer Episodes
5. Superstar (Season 4, Episode 17)
The core story of the show morphs into something else entirely in ‘Superstar’. Here, Buffy is pushed to the side and Jonathan becomes the hero of Sunnydale.
It’s one of those episodes that throws you headfirst into the story and shows you this new world without explaining how it came about. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, however. The audience knows reality has been changed but the characters do not, and it’s fun to watch them figure out the truth over the course of the story.
‘Superstar’ also offers an insight into Jonathan’s insecurities and his desire for admiration. In this alternative universe, he’s famous for more than just demon-slaying. He’s also a musician, an author, and a tactical consultant for the Initiative.
It’s a strange premise and there are plenty of better episodes in the fourth season. Yet ‘Superstar’ is still an interesting character study and Danny Strong gives a great performance as Jonathan.
