10 Worst CGI Moments In Star Trek

2. Star Trek Enterprise - Xindi Insectoid

The Xindi Insectoid race were billed as fearsome and hot headed when in actuality, they were not at all threatening. They inevitably call to mind the similarly woeful Geonosians of Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones. They are, like the Aquatics, entirely rendered through CGI but the budget really does show whenever they are on the screen.

They are shown most often alongside the Reptilian race and it only serves to do an injustice to both. The Reptilians are supposed to be fearsome and deadly - which they most certainly are, when alone, thanks to a combination of acting and fantastic make-up. There is no strong acting to reconcile the dreadful CGI display for the Xindi Insectoids here. Showing them in the room with the rest and having the other actors react so seriously to them is unintentionally hilarious - and that is with a healthy dose of suspending disbelief as well.

As previously stated, if there is a positive to take away from this, it is that the limitations that were shown here gave rise to the need for a greater budget and greater degree of technology when attempting this. Comparing the Insectoids to the Tardigrade from Discovery, for example, one would be forgiven for not knowing these two creatures came from the same franchise at all.

So, its tenuous, but possibly the Insectoids are to thank for the improvements in the future shows? Maybe?
