Yikes, where to start with this abomination?

The sixth episode of Matt Smith's reign was an important one for his tenure, as many had yet to make their mind up re his younger and daggier interpretation of the character. The well received 'Weeping Angels' double episode had immediately preceded this, but there had been a couple of poor episodes along the way and Karen Gillan was only just warming into her role as Amy Pond.

This episode suffers from too many disparate ideas, with the idea of aliens in Venice merged with vampires which is merged with living piranhas which is merged into a secret society of women. One of these ideas may have worked on their own, but it is all just a little too much, especially when sword fighting randomly gets thrown into the equation.

Worst of all is the acting, with Matt Smith struggling to find the right beats for either of the comic or dramatic moments. Arthur Darvill's interpratation of Rory is quite one tone while Karen Gillan struggles to bring any depth to her portrayal of Amy Pond, although neither actor is to blame here. Moffat's writing of the Rory and Amy relationship is nothing short of disgusting, casting Rory as the wimpy nice guy who deserves better, while the writing for Amy is nothing short of slut-shaming.

While he likes to know himself as the 'thunder from down under', Luke is actually just a big dork who loves all things sport, film, James Bond, Doctor Who and Karaoke. With all the suave and sophistication of any Aussie half way through a slab, Luke will critique every minute detail of films and shows from all eras- unless it's 1990's Simpsons episodes, because they're just perfect
