10 X-Files Episodes That Should Have Been Horror Movies

6. Leonard Betts

X-Files Familiar
Fox

The only episode featured on this list that had any real impact on the overall mythology of series, 'Leonard Betts' is hands-down one of the show's most important episodes. Though outside of its lasting legacy as a game-changer, the episode is home to one of the shows most well-rounded and revolting monsters.

This body-horror extravaganza focuses on one Leonard Betts, a genetic mutant whose primary source of nourishment is cancer.

Yep, cancer.

Able to sniff it out and in those affected, Betts is often found skulking around dive-bars, stalking those that exhibit habits like heavy smoking and chronic alcohol abuse. The rather disgusting subject matter will no doubt be off-putting to some, but its a wholly unique premise that has a lot going for it.

As we all know, cancer is an insidious disease that can affect anyone, which leaves a lot of room to explore the personal side of the illness and how it can affect people in different ways. Perhaps showing Betts infiltrating a cancer support group to single out his victims would add great heft to what is already a very bleak story.

It'd need to be approached delicately of course, but there's a lot of mileage in this one.
