90. The Doctors Daughter - I Never Would
Now Jennys death was ultimately pointless in this story, it didnt need to happen and she came back to life anyway. But if it werent for that, we wouldnt have had one of the greatest statements the Tenth Doctor ever made. Taking the gun of General Cobb, the same gun that killed his daughter, he points it at the Generals head and you believe that the Doctor is actually considering killing the man as the answer trying so hard to restrain himself, he may actually do it. We glimpse the vengeful Doctor who fought the Time War. He is the man who always loses despite everything. Then he breaks and reassures us that he never would and he is a better man for it.
89. The Time Meddler - The Monks Got a TARDIS
If you were challenged to come up with a Time Lord other than the Doctor, youd be more than likely to say the Master, maybe the Rani if you want to be clever. But the first rival Time Lord turned up in the second series. Known only as the Monk, Peter Butterworth plays the mischievous meddler who does what the common man would do with a time machine. Hed have all the fun in the world and dabble in things he probably shouldnt. The Monk is the Doctor without rules. He isnt evil, hes just naïve and irresponsible. The Doctor had always stressed how alone he was in the universe so to meet another of his people who by this point hadnt even been named I might add was an unexpected surprise. The big reveal is in a scene the Monk doesnt even appear in. It is Steven and Vicki who stumble upon his TARDIS. Their surprise no doubt matched that of the audience. The series once again was venturing into new territory.
88. Battlefield Brigadiers Death
This scene was intended to be the Brigadiers actual death and noble it would have been too. Facing the Destroyer alone and pumping silver bullets into it. His last words would have been, I just do the best I can. before firing his final shot into the creature. Despite the numerous attempts made of the Brigadiers life from the script department over the years, each time Nicholas Courtney returned, he proved that there was life in the old dog yet. As he lies in the flames after the Destroyer is destroyed. The Doctor cradles his body moping, only for the Brigadier to look back up smiling at him and tell him hes speaking nonsense. We salute you Lethbridge-Stewart in your finest hour. Honourable mention must also go to 'The Wedding of River Song' for the Brigadiers passing. Even then it was considered having the Doctor return to the rest home to take up that extra brandy and tell the Brigadier it was a mean trick he played. The undefeatable Lethbridge-Stewart everybody.
87. The Time Warrior Under the Hemet
One of the greatest reveals and monster designs comes in 'The Time Warrior'. So effective that it cemented the Sontarans place as one of the most popular monsters of all time. Their first appearance is undoubtedly their best. For the whole first episode of the Time Warrior, the Sonataran named Lynx never removed his helmet, until the end of the first episode where it became the cliffhanger. Children and adults may have speculated about what was beneath that helmet. Few could have imagined what they ultimately saw. That baked potato/Christmas pudding head. Almost like he had been wearing that helmet too long and moulded to its shape. It is a classic and unforgettable moment. Although the first thing he does the following week, is put the helmet straight back on again. But it was worth it!
86. The Greatest Show in the Galaxy Werewolf
'The Greatest Show in the Galaxy' is a very twisted story. Visitors forced to perform for the Gods of Ragnarok and if they fail to entertain them, they are vaporised. But what kind of thing do they find entertaining? Well having some poor innocent girl become a werewolf of course. Tricked by stage lighting, Mags begins to undergo her transformation into a carnivorous beast. The direction and make up on this really sells it and is truly gruesome. A sign that Doctor Who was getting back on track and putting those kids behind the sofa.
