11 Best 11th Doctor Episodes
10. The Angels Take Manhattan
The two perfect companions for the 11th Doctor were Amy and Rory Pond, the former being just as childishly silly as the Doctor she traveled with, and the latter being a snarky realist that kept the two nice and grounded. Unfortunately, seeing as how these two have absolutely no reason to want to leave The Doctor of their own accord, there was only ever one way this could end.
When The Doctor and friends stumble upon an apartment used by the weeping angels as a time energy farm by trapping the residents inside it until they die, Rory and Amy just barely manage to escape a horrible death that seemed inevitable by the very laws of time. Only for one last weeping angel to get them both before they can get back to the TARDIS, first getting Rory by surprise, then getting a willing Amy, who would rather be sent back to the past and have a shot at seeing Rory again, instead of staying with The Doctor and there being no chance in hell.
It's an utterly heartbreaking and yet fitting end to the Ponds as characters, knowing that at least the couple has each other, even if The Doctor can't ever see them again. It's even more heartbreaking when you rewatch the first episode of Smith's run and realize the true tragic significance of the episode's ending with 7 year old Amy seemingly hearing the TARDIS appearing in front of her. Solidifying that this was how it was going to end from the beginning.
