8. A Christmas Carol

Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith Doctor Who Series 5
BBC

A Christmas Carol is one of those stories where it's repeated so constantly that you can totally get away with The Doctor coming up with a plan just by repeating the name of the book over and over until he puts two and two together. But that's because it's a tried and true formula for a character study that opens itself up for lots of cool spins.

In this case, a ship full of hundred of people, including Rory and Amy, is crashing down onto a planet with an artificial storm system that's run by the cruel old miser Kazran Sardyk, played wonderfully by Michael Gambon. The Doctor decides that instead of ramming his head against this walking, talking brick wall, the best course is to go back in time to when Kazran was a kid and help him grow up to be a better man, with the help of a cryogenically frozen young woman.

You might be thinking "wait that's not how time travel works in Doctor Who!" To which I respond with "Correct...now stop being a party pooper." Because this episode earns its minor rule breaking due to it being in service to a truly fantastic story and one of the best renditions of the timeless classic ever made.
