Gillian Anderson received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Special Agent Dana Scully in The X-Files and it's a role for which she is still internationally beloved. As another cult icon in the world of science fiction it's no surprise that her name is one that has also been linked to the Time Lord's adventures and as guest roles go, this one would have been quite something to behold. Back in 2009 the American actress was attached - via the Daily Express - to the rumoured return of the Rani, a scientific genius and renegade Time Lord (yes, another one!) who was played with gusto by the late Kate O'Mara in the Classic Series. Gillian's signing was described as "a major coup" by a show insider and her encounter with the then-current Doctor David Tennant looked set to be "one of the greatest sci-fi moments of all time". It all sounds very exciting so it's a shame it never came about. Five years later and fans are still waiting for it to come to fruition.
