11 Doctor Who Spin Offs That Really Should've Happened By Now
10. The Paternoster Gang & Friends
WHY: Charming title aside, there were rumours last year about a possible spin-off featuring the Paternoster Gang to accompany the main series. And why not? It sounds like a fantastic idea to feature a psychotic potato dwarf, a lizard woman from the dawn of time and her human maidservant wife solving mysteries in Victorian London. Such a miniseries would surely appeal to the younger viewers in the style of The Sarah Jane Adventures. Unlike SJA and Torchwood (which tried to emulate Doctor Who without the Time Lord nor the time travel making the former the X-Files for kids or X-Files with steroids and gay sex for the latter), it is different in that it is the aliens who are already defending the Earth. Plus, the witty banter, riposte and Strax the comic relief would be certain to entertain the children on a Sunday afternoon while you're playing Flappy Bird. WHAT: Such a spin-off could go two ways - similar to SJA and Torchwood in the "Defending the Earth against Aliens" theme or going back to their roots, which is solving Sherlock Holmes-esque mysteries. Either theme would allow greater exploration into the characters' backgrounds including Madame Vastra's Silurian heritage, Jenny's family's disapproval at her, ahem, 'lifestyle choices' or Strax's Sontaran history and propensity for violence. What choices would Vastra or Strax make should the Silurians or Sontarans return and question their desire to help the puny human race? What could Jenny do if her rich family decides to close down the shutters of the Paternoster Detective Agency (TM)? How would the gang react if they hear of rival amateurs Jago and Lightfoot horning in on their territory of extraterrestrial crime? There may be too much samurai action on the Paternoster gang's part in Doctor Who. Perhaps it's time the Great Detective, her wife, and potato butler got back to basics. Elementary, my dear Strax.
