The exploding TARDIS created cracks in all of time and space that oblierated the rest of the universe. Earth was the only surviving planet, and even it didn't have much time left. But the Doctor figured out that between the Pandorica's restoration field and the atoms it contained from the original universe, he could set things right.

The only problem was that the Pandorica needed to be flown into the sun, and the pilot would ultimately be erased from existence. The Doctor willingly accepted this risk even though his own existence was jeopardized.
