11 Scariest Horror-Themed TV Shows To Binge-Watch This Halloween 2020
1. Channel Zero
This horror anthology series had an unfortunately short lifespan; four seasons of the show aired between 2016-2018 before it was unceremoniously cancelled.
The show's lead writer, Nick Antosca (whose other TV credits include work on Hannibal), took inspiration from popular creepypastas and themed each six-episode season around a different, entirely unconnected story.
Channel Zero's short seasons are the perfect length for a televised short horror story; the plot isn’t left to dawdle, and no time is wasted setting the mood and getting into the scares.
Channel Zero is inventive and rarely fails to produce horrific imagery which lingers with the viewer well after the episode ends: children made from teeth, statues with hands erupting from the top of their heads, imaginary friends made real - and looking far less innocent in the flesh than their crayon-drawn pictures suggested. Every time a monster makes an appearance it’s exactly as terrifying as it should be.
The televised horror anthology seems to be gaining popularity with several choosing to take this route now (American Horror Story, The Haunting of Hill House, Channel Zero). It's an ideally suited format for TV horror; the equivalent of reading a book of short horror stories or telling ghost stories by the campfire. Channel Zero was the best realised example, and fans can only hope that it one day gets revived, and we get a Season five or a spiritual successor to the show.
