12 Abandoned Doctor Who Subplots

4. Rassilon The... Returner?

Doctor Who The Day of the Doctor John Hurt War Doctor

Although the Master has been the Doctor's main source of scourge, it's that rapscallion Rassilon who has given our time travelling hero the most epic problems.

One of the founding fathers of Time Lord society was brought back by Russell T Davies in spectacularly messianic fashion in The End of Time. Replete with godlike gauntlet, Rassilon's Final Sanction would have resulted in the Time Lords becoming "creatures of consciousness", and the small matter of the end of time itself. Now we know why the Doctor used the Moment to end the Time War.

Of course The Day of the Doctor changed all that - and Rassilon's thanks was to imprison him in his confession dial for 4.5 billion years. Charming. This incarnation of Rassilon in Hell Bent had also regenerated from James Bond into Maester Luwin.

Unfortunately, the face-off between the Doctor and Rassilon didn't escalate into Travolta/Cage proportions (OK that's going a bit too far admittedly). Instead, the Lord President is pretty much unceremoniously banished from Gallifrey. Perhaps he should've gone to Nidavellir to boost his gauntlet firepower - they make some of the best gauntlets there.

But as Rassilon exclaimed: "Gallifrey is mine!" Given the Master's destruction of Gallifrey, again (honestly, give that planet a break), this perfectly sets up an awesome and amazing Time Lord trifecta showdown. Lena Headey as Rassilon, anyone?

Anyway, speaking of the Doctor ending the Time War...

The name's Colbourn, James - yeah, doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
