1. Blink
This one had to be number one. I mean, come on. This episode is so scary it's positively traumatizing, it's worthy of being called child abuse with that end monologue, it's the best Doctor Who episode ever. The uncanny wanders around everywhere. The villains are exactly what they're not supposed to be--always still, personality-less--but they somehow are always scary. They are frozen, yet somehow they can follow Sally. For some reason, the Doctor told her to beware of them. Then we discover that they are only evil, can only get you, if you stop looking at them. And as we all know, once you start worrying about not blinking you'll be desperate to blink. The moment when the teeth are revealed, when we realize that the statue is reaching for Sally, when we realize what the angels do to you if they even touch you... It's all enough to haunt you, even without the paranoia monologue at the end. And the best and scariest part of the episode is one you only notice on re-watch: the angels never move when we look at them. There are plenty of moments when all the characters are looking elsewhere, but the camera is still on the angels so they can't move because we are holding them frozen in time. When one of them reaches for Sally, she doesn't see it, and it only stops because we see it. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to curl up with my teddy bear and watch something soothing. Like Winnie the Pooh. Or maybe Madeline. Or, I know, Coraline--that's not scary, is it? It's for kids, after all!
