So perfect is he in the role of Don Draper that it seems unthinkable now that it could have gone to anybody else, but at the show's very inception Hamm was not a popular choice. The show's creator Matthew Weiner had felt Hamm was perfect for the role ofa rugged and charming advertising executive, but the show's producers took some serious convincing. Describing him as "bland", "middle of the road", and worst of all "unsexy". They were also unconvinced by his star-power, being a relative unknown at the time, and the network were convinced that a big name was required to helm a show that they were convinced had the potential to be a huge hit. However so committed to his gut feeling was Weiner, that he kept brining Hamm back to audition in front of them. Big names might suggest big audiences, but this particular casting decision proved that big personalities can work just as well.
