12 TV Comedies You Need To Be Watching
6. Silicon Valley
While a lot of comedies on the air are basically timeless and could work in any decade, Silicon Valley is very much a show about the here and now, serving as a hilarious critique of the culture surrounding technology and technology development.
Created by Office Space's Mike Judge, the series follows a group of guys working on a startup in Silicon Valley, a music app called Pied Piper. When it becomes clear how powerful their data compression algorithm is, they get caught up in the highly competitive, multimillion dollar industry faster than they could have imagined.
What's great about the show is that it takes these guys who range from being socially awkward to just extremely immature and thrusts them into a massive position of power. It's like seeing the dudes in a Seth Rogen comedy suddenly becoming responsible for millions of dollars. T.J. Miller's character is a particular standout, so incredibly obnoxious but in the best way possible, like in one sequence where he repeatedly insults important CEOs in an attempt to get better offers.
This is a show that's both really smart, trusting its audience to follow allow with its somewhat geeky jokes, but also delightfully immature with its comedy. There's just no other series that will make a really dirty penis joke as told through a sophisticated algorithm.
