7. The Romanoffs

Mad Men is one of the best dramas of the century, and probably of all time. Its remarkable consistency left audiences on a high, and fans awaiting creator Matthew Weiner’s next project with baited breath.

It turned out, regrettably, to be The Romanoffs. An eight-part globe spanning anthology series about disparate people who believe they’re descendants of the titular Russian royalty. It was an intriguing, if somewhat odd, concept. But while the production values were immense and the talent on both sides of the camera of the highest calibre, the show failed to connect.

The key issue for many was the simple indulgence on the part of Weiner. An Amazon Prime original, Weiner was free from time constraints, and accordingly let every episode run on endlessly. With several instalments running to feature length, it was a patience tester to say the least.

The Romanoffs was never going to be for everyone, and it found fans too, but those who disliked it absolutely loathed it. While it hasn’t been officially cancelled, a show of this magnitude gaining such a mixed response is most likely more trouble than it’s worth for Amazon.
