Earlier this year, ABC and Black-ish showrunner Kenya Barris agreed not to air a controversial, politically-themed episode of his hit sitcom which was filmed the prior November.

The crux of the disagreement between the network and Barris reportedly involved a scene where Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Junior (Marcus Scribner) debate the merits of players kneeling during the national anthem before American football games.

The episode was pulled from its planned February 27 air date, and a few weeks later it was announced the episode was scrapped entirely and would never air despite being completed.

Rumours have persisted ever since about the precise nature of the "creative differences" at play here, but it doesn't take much reading between the lines to see a twitchy network bristling up against a bold, forward-thinking storyteller. A regrettable situation for all involved.
