10. The Master Returns (Utopia)

Had somebody been peeking at our Christmas list? The memorable Series 3 finale back in 2007 marked the 21st century return of another of the Doctor's iconic adversaries and he only had to go all the way to the end of the universe to find this one. Fresh from his first series of Torchwood, Captain Jack Harkness also returned to accompany the Tenth Doctor and Martha Jones on this acclaimed adventure but he wasn't the only familiar face the titular Time Lord would encounter during his fateful trip to Malcassairo. The more dubious viewers would've already sussed that there was something more to the mysterious Professor Yana (Derek Jacobi) than initially met the eye but that wouldn't have detracted from Utopia's climactic cliffhanger in which he was revealed as the malevolent Master. Last seen on our screens during the ill-fated 1996 TV movie, the return of the renegade Time Lord was by this point long overdue and viewers had hardly been given the chance to get their heads around his comeback before he exploded into John Simm and unleashed his latest treasure trove of tyranny unto the world.
