13 Most Memorable Doctor Who Guest Stars

1. Anne Robinson in €˜Bad Wolf€™

Let down? Cop-out? Pointless ending, just played out for laughs? Wrong! In a way, this is the perfect guest appearance. At the time, the Weakest Link was one of the BBC€™s biggest shows, and while I€™m not even sure if it€™s on any more, Sherlock€™s not gonna be on forever so Rupert Graves in €˜Dinosaurs on a Spaceship€™ is going to look pretty silly isn€™t it? In British culture, the only two times when kiddies are allowed to break their stiff upper lip and dive behind the sofa is when the Daleks show up, and when you see Anne Robinson€™s latest Botox injection. Now put the two in the same forty minutes, and substitute Botox for a steel face that vaporizes you if you€™re voted off and kills you faster if you run away. Now tell me Anne Robinson doesn€™t deserve the top spot on the list. The entire story is extremely dark, showing the consequences of the Doctor€™s never-look-back attitude in the form a game-station where anyone can be a contestant and the result of failure is death, predating the Hunger Games by several years, might I add. However, it€™s the Anne-Droid (their words, not mine) that I remember most about the €˜Bad Wolf€™ story, and Rose€™s sudden vaporisation at the hands of the machine is particularly resonant. I recommend watching that scene back; it€™s still brilliant and haunting even now. As in the case of Pegg (who starred as a baddie on the exact same space station bizarrely enough), the Anne-Droid is a pretty humorous character, with Robinson doing what she does best. Being a total b**ch. This jarring twist makes the character and Robinson playing her both funny and creepy, although you actually cheer for her a little bit when she shows up in the next episode and slaughters a trio of Daleks. And then you cheer for the Dalek that blows off her head. Yeah€ there are some mixed feelings there€ Have I missed anyone out? Is there anyone who stuck in your mind who should have been on this list? Let me know in the comments, and be aware that anyone who praises Peter Kay as the Abzorbaloff deserves to be exterminated.
