14 Great Futurama Characters In Only One Episode

1. Marianne (Stench And Stenchibility - Season 7, Episode 25)

It’s another one-off character from Stench and Stenchability, but to be frank, Marianne is much better than Tonya and arguably one of the most important characters of the show, even if she’s only seen for one episode.

Throughout the entire series of Futurama, Zoidberg has always been hated by his co-workers as well as being extremely unlucky in love. His physical appearance and body odour have always been off putting and additionally, he’s suffers from gluttony and personal boundary issues. Nobody cares for his well-being; he is frequently hurt by his crew both physically and mentally. But as an audience, I’m sure we’ve always rooted for Dr Zoidberg and have hoped he’ll be lucky in love someday.

And in the penultimate episode of the entire series, Zoidberg finally gets his happy ending. He is about to go on a face-to-face date with an alien woman from another planet. In prepping for his date, he goes to a local flower stand in which he meets Marianne. Instantly, you just warm to Marianne. She’s a mild-mannered, beautiful lady and probably the only person who has showed kindness to Zoidberg right from the beginning of meeting him. She’s also voiced by Game of Thrones’ Emilie Clarke – a voice perfect for the delightfully charming Marianne.

After Zoidberg’s date goes horrendously bad because of his natural scent, he goes back to get the flowers refunded by Marianne. Before she reluctantly agrees, the infamous criminal Roberto attempts to mug her but Zoidberg’s awful stench repulses him off. Marianne is grateful and he is confused as to why she likes him, despite his smell. He discovers she has no sense of smell.

The two begin dating and she thoroughly enjoys his company but Zoidberg can’t live with the guilt that as a surgeon, he could alter Marianne’s nose so that she could have a sense of smell. He makes the tough decision to sacrifice his happiness for the person he loves most.

She awakens from a successful surgery ready to smell flowers but is completely disgusted by them and much prefers Zoidberg’s natural odour. Because she never knew good smells from bad ones, she likes his smell because she has always liked him. Their relationship happily continues and Marianne finds a new career as a garbage truck driver.

It would have been good to see more of Marianne and Zoidberg together in later episodes but in some ways, it’s nice to have ambiguity as to how their relationship would develop in the future. And either way, it’s a relief to know that Zoidberg found someone who genuinely loves him back.
