14 Tales From The History Of Doctor Who From William Hartnell To Jodie Whittaker

2. The Next Doctor? How About An Oscar Winner?

At age fifty five when cast, Peter Capaldi was the same age as William Hartnell when he took over the role, tying the two men for oldest actors to play ongoing versions of The Doctor.

Capaldi, like David Tennant, had been a fan of the show all of his life. Back when Jon Pertwee was The Doctor, Capaldi entered into correspondance with Barry Letts, the producer during that period. As a result of these letters (and story pitches!), Capaldi was invited to the set where he met with Letts, writer Terrance Dicks and Pertwee himself.

In the intervening years, Capaldi became an Academy-Award winner, thanks to Franz Kafka's It's A Wonderful Life (starring future Doctor Who guest star Richard E. Grant), which he wrote and directed. This make Capaldi, to date, the only Oscar winner to portray The Doctor.

Not a bad title to hold at all!
