14th Doctor Who: 10 Actors Who Could Play Russell T. Davies’ Doctor

5. Kris Marshall

No one on this list has been rumoured for the role The Doctor as many times as Kris Marshall, whose name seems to make a reappearance every time it a regeneration comes around. Marshall was the favourite to play Thirteen for quite some time, with rumours circulating that the actor was in talks with the show, though this does contradict Chibnall saying he had always planned to cast a female Doctor.

Marshall is most notable in recent years for portraying the very Doctor-like DI Humphrey Goodman in the BBC’s Death In Paradise, though he has also starred in My Family, Love Actually and The Merchant of Venice.

Marshall would be a safe choice and would likely make a good, if not particularly groundbreaking Doctor - can anybody imagine him going Time Lord Victorious? We can’t. Then again, perhaps a safe pair of hands is what the show needs right now…
