Anyone who watches a lot of anime is familiar with shonen storytelling. It typically follows a young protagonist on a quest to become more powerful, fighting enemies in a rinse and repeat manner - think Naruto, One Piece or Dragon Ball Z.

Demon Slayer is, without a doubt, one of these shows. It follows a lot of the same beats as other shonen series'. However, it goes above and beyond to do them so damn well that it's enthralling. That's why Demon Slayer is one of the best shows to watch after Attack on Titan; it's a perfect gateway to the tropes of anime.

The series follows Tanjiro, a young man whose family are murdered by demons. His only surviving sibling - Nezuko - is left alive but has become a demon herself. From there, he joins the Demon Slayer Corps and battles to cure his sister and bring down the demons.

There are two major components that make this show special, and the first is the animation. The battle scenes are spectacular, with a striking visual style and smooth movements.

Then, there's the tenderness. Most anime depict monsters and demons as merciless villains, but this show always makes an effort to humanise its baddies, turning it into a genuinely moving experience.
