14. The Pursuit Of Love

Made for Love
BBC

Emily Mortimer's confident adaptation of Nancy Mitford's romantic novel The Pursuit of Love is a pleasant and nostalgic look inside the lives of two cousins each confronting life from radically different angles.

With a packed ensemble led by a typically charming Lily James and the understated Emily Beecham, the drama takes place in the 1930s, and finds writer/director Mortimer crafting two remarkably different but equally compelling stories of identity, love, motherhood and friendship with both striking humour and serious emotional heft.

The Pursuit of Love is both a satire of a world long past and the extravagances of wealth, and a stylish period drama with enough glamour and eccentricities to keep you focussed outside of the bittersweet plot.

Throw in co-stars like the wonderfully hammy Dominic West and the charismatic Andrew Scott, and you've got yourself a winning three-part dramedy worth getting lost in.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
