15 Greatest Episodes Of The Walking Dead

1. Them (Season 5, Episode 10)

The Walking Dead Them
AMC

The Walking Dead is all about people. More specifically, it's about people in a hopeless situation, thrust into a world no one could ever have been prepared for. No episode better captures the essence of the show than the season five episode, Them.

Bob (Lawrence Gilliard Jr), Beth and Tyreese have all died in quick succession. The group is low on supplies, with nowhere to go and no one to turn to. Not that they'd want to turn to anyone, their trust for people at an all-time low and their optimism broken beyond prepare.

Them is not an extravagant episode. It simply follows the remaining members of the group as they walk through the world, with no destination in mind and no clue how they're meant to survive.

At its centre, Sasha fights with the rage she feels from Bob and Tyreese's deaths, putting herself and the others in needless danger as she lets loose on a group of walkers. Maggie deals with the loss of her sister. Daryl strays from the group and cries as he remembers Beth.

Later, it rains, and the group hide out in a barren barn. There, Rick gives his now famous "We are the walking dead" speech, and the group band together to hold the barn doors closed against a swarm of walkers.

Them is The Walking Dead at its most thoughtful, bleak yet hopeful, dark yet touching, and is to date the perfect embodiment of what the show is all about.
