15 Greatest Episodes Of The Walking Dead

2. The Grove (Season 4, Episode 14)

The Walking Dead The Grove
AMC

The Grove is an all-time classic. Like every other episode in the second half of season four, it focuses on a handful of survivors as they come to terms with the destruction of the Prison and the fate of their possibly dead friends.

The episode focuses on Carol, Tyreese, baby Judith and sisters Lizzie (Brighton Sharbino) and Mika (Kyla Kenedy), as they set up in a little cabin and contemplate what to do next.

There, though, cracks begin to form in the group. Carol, for one thing, is harbouring a devastating secret from Tyreese, and Lizzie is showing signs of serious mental instability, believing walkers to be her friends and refusing to accept the world she now lives in.

What follows is the show's most emotionally devastating and bleak entry, as Lizzie snaps and kills her sister so she can come back as a walker, and Carol must kill Lizzie before she hurts anyone else. Afterward, Carol admits to Tyreese that she killed his girlfriend (Melissa Ponzio), in hopes of stopping the spread of the flu.

The Grove is not for the fainthearted, and nor it a very re-watchable episode, but it is a perfect portrait of how not everyone is ready for the new world, and how tough decisions have to be made in order to ensure survival.

And when McBride, Coleman and Sharbino are this compelling to watch, that just makes it all the better.
