15 Saddest How I Met Your Mother Episodes

Though not everyone's favourite episode, How I Met Your Mother's two-part finale is a hard-hitting emotional rollercoaster. The Mother's death may have been an ill-advised development overall, but it was so sudden and well-acted that it definitely leaves fans reeling from an emotional level. Also, finally getting a chance to see Ted and Tracy's first interaction is pure gold, and though sweet at its centre, it's actually quite sad considering what happens to her.

The saddest moment though (and the strongest aspect of the finale) comes courtesy of Barney. Having gotten divorced from Robin after a whole season centred around their wedding, Barney reverts to his playboy ways, only to get one woman pregnant.

Though unable to grasp the seriousness of this development, Barney takes one look at his new daughter and breaks down, starting a new chapter in his legendary life. This, mixed with the death of Tracy and the gang's estrangement from a now world famous Robin, makes Last Forever as heart-wrenching as it is divisive.
