15 Shocking Doctor Who Plot Twists That Nobody Saw Coming

6. The Doctor's Childhood

Doctor Who fans really don't know all that much about the Doctor considering he's the show's title character. In fact, since day one he has remained one of its constant riddles (and may that never change) so when something does happen that gives us an insight into the life and times of the titular Time Lord, it's always an auspicious - and not to mention hotly debated - occasion. It's even better when it comes out of nowhere, too, and last year Steven Moffat managed to drop yet another bombshell when Clara Oswald made a surprise visit to the Doctor during his formative years on Gallifrey at the end of Listen. Nobody expected that the sleeping child she was talking to would turn out to be the Doctor himself which made the whole scene even more exciting when it transpired that the impossible girl was directly responsible for instilling the foundations of his attitude towards fear. After all, it makes a companion of us all. Of course, there's also the unanswered question of just how Clara managed to journey to Gallifrey in the first place. It's such a brilliant and heartwarming scene, though, that such a gaping plot hole can be overlooked on this occasion. Any exploration of the Doctor's past is more than appreciated and viewers definitely didn't see this one coming.
