2 Ups And 7 Downs From Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 3.7 — What Is Starfleet?
6. UP — Firing, Range
One of the few positives this week was La'An, and she was barely in it. The Enterprise's Chief Security and Tactical Officer is known for being no-nonsense. Here was no different. Plus, a flying camera in the face is nothing compared to "twelve broken bones, a fractured skull, multiple phaser burns, radiation poisoning, [and also being] slashed open by a Kolaran blade". All part of the job!
La'An paused for thought, but gave open and honest answers. "Unless you can kill them first, the best move is to run" is not practical advice for every situation, but it is a line worth remembering. The better part of valour… and all that. As ever, Christina Chong gives a strong performance, a lot of it in the nuance of a few fleeting facial expressions.
As well as providing some sharp quotes, La'An also left a few drones on the firing range in cinders. Despite the arsenal of weapons, and Beto's incessant, somewhat impertinent, interrogations, the whole sequence is one of the episode's lighter moments. There is an unmistakable glee on La'An's face as she turns to the camera, backed by her own controlled chaos.
