20 Best Anime TV Series Of All Time

14. Mononoke

Princess Mononoke
Toei Animation

Not to be confused with Hayao Miyazaki's excellent film Princess Mononoke, Mononoke tells the story of a traveling medicine seller who moonlights as a destroyer of evil supernatural spirits.

What immediately strikes you about Mononoke is the wonderful, lush visual style which draws upon traditional Japanese artists such as Hokusai. It's entirely fitting given the mystical storyline and Edo setting and really gives the series a unique sense of a time and place.

It's also thoroughly engaging on a story level, with its unique blend of historical and supernatural allowing for some brave narrative experiments and some pleasantly complex subtexts.
