20 Best Anime TV Series Of All Time

13. Death Note

Death Note
Madhouse

The success of an anime series can be measured by whether or not it has a live action adaptation - not only does Death Note have several Japanese movies on release but there's even the intriguing prospect of an American remake from talented horror director Adam Wingard.

Like Mononoke, Death Note is a story which emphasises the supernatural - here, however, the setting is present day Japan and the investigations carried out by Light Yagami and his demonic partner Ryuk are more akin to contemporary thrillers.

Death Note's real appeal lies in the moral ambiguity of the story - seeing how Light's character develops as he uses the titular book to kill his enemies makes this a thought-provoking watch, and while the story does occasionally lag there are some truly great pay-offs which make it worthwhile.
