Back when Steven Moffat was toiling away under the regime of Russell T Davies, he gave fans a taste of things to come with the onslaught of the Vashta Nerada. Hiding in the shadows of an intergalactic library, these microscopic killers waited for victims to stray into the dark, before devouring their flesh in seconds. An even more hideous detail emerged when David Tennant's Tenth Doctor witnessed skeletons controlled by the ravenous species and there was worse to come due to a twist of technological fate. Miss Evangelista (Talulah Riley) lost her life, but in a bone-freezing development it transpired she hadn't died yet. The mental echoes of the tragic girl manifested via her communication device, her voice asking what was going on as the last vestiges of her shut down, even while her body had long since been plundered. Truly, madly, deeply horrible. Another sleepless night courtesy of Mr Moffat.
