12. Godless

Stranger Things
Netflix

Despite its initial success, Godless is probably one of Netflix's most forgotten masterstrokes. A Western drama following an outlaw (Jack O'Connell) as he hides from his infamous mentor turned enemy (Jeff Daniels) in a town populated only by women, the miniseries stands tall as one of Netflix's most inspired and affecting creations.

Featuring a series of fully realised characters, brought to life by the immeasurable acting talents of Michelle Dockery, Merritt Weaver and Scoot McNairy, Godless benefits massively from its ensemble cast, but also from the tightly-wound writing and direction of Scott Frank.

Godless is set in a world typical to the Western genre, but flips the genre's gender conventions on their head to create a series that is as thrilling as it is empowering.

Though not a particularly joyous ride, the miniseries is nonetheless an engrossing cinematic experience that deserves to be seen as a future classic of the Western genre. It's dark, violent and expertly paced, and stands as a Netflix series unlike any other.
