Like most true crime documentaries, American Vandal aims to get to the heart of one important question. It's a quest for truth and justice, and to solve the mystery:

Who drew the dicks?

After making big waves with an actual documentary, Making A Murderer, Netflix have now sent up the genre as well in a show that's just as captivating and perhaps even better put together.

The central conceit could have come across as immature or one-noted, but creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda have managed to deliver both a pitch-perfect satire of the genre and a brilliant example of it as well, with a mystery that leaves you engrossed and in fits of laughter.

An investigation into who drew penises on 27 cars in the staff parking lot of a high school, the show expertly mimics the genre's tropes while also conveying an authentic high school experience. It keeps you guessing throughout, layered with clever twists and cliffhangers, and it is, of course, absolutely hilarious. There's much more to this than dick jokes, but they're a good enough reason to start watching.
