17. Six Feet Under
Perhaps best known for its distinctly unique and unforgettable ending, Six Feet Under is a very strange comedy-drama about a family that run a funeral home. It finds laughter in the bleakest of topics and is a fine display of Alan Ball's (of American Beauty fame) writing talents.
In hindsight, it's a little weird to watch Michael C Hall, now so closely associated with Dexter play the conservative and repressed David Fisher, a conflicted gay man, but he is the heart of the show.
