Unfairly maligned at times due to its pacing and lack of 'action', Boardwalk Empire is a sweeping odyssey into prohibition era America with a level of detail that could only be accomplished with the hours TV gives you. Steve Buscemi finally gets his due in a lead role worthy of his talents and he is backed up by an extraordinary cast featuring Michael Shannon, Michael K Williams, Jack Huston, and Stephen Graham as Al Capone.
It may require a more patient viewer but those that want a slow-burning character drama about immensely complex individuals during a fascinating time in history will be richly rewarded.
