20 Mind-Blowing Facts About Orphan Black

11. The Male Clones Happened Sort Of By Accident

The big twist at the end of the second season was the reveal that Sarah was not alone. Well, obviously she wasn't alone, she's got an as-yet undiscovered amount of clone sisters, but they're not alone; there's also a whole separate, equally secretive initiative that's been producing male clones, which is set to be the principal driving force behind the third season's overarching story. Great a twist though it was that Mark €“ the hyper-intense, hyper-creepy member of the Proletheans €“ was also part of a batch of clones, the reveal actually happened by accident. It was always planned for the so-called Project Castor to be in existence, but it took a while to decide on who the male clones would actually be. For a while they considered just bringing in a whole new actor. The reveal in the season two finale even had a fake out where it looked like it was going to be Paul, former monitor of Elizabeth Childs, that was part of the male clones. That was discarded as being too gimmicky, and apparently all the other male characters on the show were considered, including Felix and Vic. It was only at the eleventh hour they settled on Mark €“ who was originally supposed to be offed by Paul halfway through that season.
