18. The Inspiration For The Soup Nazi

Writer, Spike Feresten, came up to Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David during a brainstorming session with ten potential ideas for future episodes. When Seinfeld and David rejected all of them, Feresten scrambled to think of something funny and told them about a crazy soup vendor who worked in Midtown.

This man, Al Yeganeh, had a reputation for only serving customers if they followed a strict set of rules. If they deviated from his rule set in the slightest, he went berserk and banned them from his restaurant.

This anecdote created one of the most famous episodes as well as one of the most iconic characters, The Soup Nazi. The actor who portrayed the Soup Nazi, Larry Thomas, even got an Emmy nomination for his mesmerising performance.

Despite the fact this episode caused Yeganeh's soup kitchen to receive far more business, he said the show ruined his life. He was so offended by the character, he banned the words "Nazi" and "Seinfeld" from his work place. It goes without saying that he also banned the show's cast and writers.

But it could have been worse. Originally, David and Seinfeld wanted to reveal the Soup Nazi was an ACTUAL Nazi!
