The rights to Justin Cronin's novel The Passage were snapped up by Fox 2000 and Sir Ridley Scott's Scott Free Productions after a fierce bidding war back in 2007, a truly remarkable show of faith in the book given it wasn't published until 2010.

In the nine years since the movie hasn't really moved forward, despite the completion of Cronin's sprawling vampire trilogy (the final instalment, City of Mirrors, was released last year).

Now the series is instead getting the TV treatment, still with Scott Free Productions and now 20th Century Fox TV. A pilot has been ordered, which will be written by Friday Night Lights' Liz Helden, and is set to be directed and produced by Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves (though this was before he was brought in to direct The Batman, which could feasibly change things depending on scheduling).

The books, which play out over a century and move from government conspiracy to post-apocalyptic drama to vampire horror, are great, and if Fox can do it right they should make for a fantastic long-running TV series.
