Hodor has been a fan favourite character of Game Of Thrones fans for many years, despite being a total one-note creation. He’s the gentle giant who looked after Bran falling his accident, and he was able to get great comic mileage out of only being able to say one word.

Season six revealed the stunning origin of that word, and it was way more tragic than anyone could have expected. It turns out Bran can affect the past with his new abilities since he accidentally wargs into young Hodor during one of his trip. During all this present day Hoder blocks a door to prevent Wights chasing Bran, and the order to “Hold the door!” get warged into the mind of his young self.

He has a seizure repeating the phrase, until it finally condenses into “Hodor”, while the wights tear through the door and kill his older self. Congrats George, you made us cry again.
