25 Mind-Blowing Facts About The West Wing

10. The White House Hosted A "Big Block Of Cheese Day" In 2014 And 2015... Just As Leo McGarry Did In The West Wing And Andrew Jackson Did In The 1830s

White House Big Block Of Cheese Day

White House Chief of Staff Leo McGarry dedicates one day in every year at the White House as "Big Block of Cheese Day" - in which the West Wing opens its doors to those causes who usually fail to get the ear of the important decision-makers in the land.

Inspired by President Andrew Jackson's invitation to allow American citizens to come and eat some of the 1,400-pound block of cheese he had in the main foyer of the White House in 1837, Leo insists it is important the White House hear from such people as environmentalists who want to create a "wolf-only highway" and others who believe that worlds maps should be re-standardised to an inverted Peters Projection map.

Interestingly, in 2014 and 2015 President Barack Obama's administration - partially inspired by The West Wing, and partially by Jackson - hosted two online "Big Block of Cheese Days", and even used the cast of the show to promote them.
